The Chinese Crested is a unique breed. Here are some of the most common questions that we get about them.
What are the differences between the Hairless and the Powderpuff Cresteds?
What colors are Chinese Cresteds?
The Cresteds can be any color or a combination of colors such as black, white, brown, apricot, tan, lilac, golden or spotted. The skin on the hairless may darken or lighten with the seasons.
What is the energy level of Chinese Cresteds and what activities can they do?
Cresteds have a medium to high energy level, but they also enjoy quiet times with their owners. Cresteds can excel in many competition events such as Obedience, Rally and Agility. They make excellent Therapy Dogs.
Are there any health issues with the Chinese Cresteds?
Cresteds are relatively very healthy with a life expectancy of 15 to 16 years. For more information, see Health on our About the Breed page.
Are Chinese Crested Hairless and Powderpuffs born in the same litter?
If at least one parent is a Hairless, the litter can produce both Hairless and Powderpuffs. Two Powderpuff parents will produce only Powderpuffs.
What is the typical size of a Chinese Crested?
According the AKC standard, the size is ideally 11 to 13 inches at the withers (shoulders), but is often slightly larger or smaller. Depending on the size of the dog, the average weight is around 10 lbs.
What behavior do Chinese Cresteds typically exhibit with other people, children, and other animals and what is their temperament?
While every dog is different depending on breeding and environment, it is generally found that Cresteds enjoy kind and gentle humans and are NOT for rough handling or ignoring. They are alert, loving, playful, and entertaining with both humans and other animals. Cresteds are loyal and enjoy companionship whether it's lying in your lap or running an agility course with you.
What grooming is needed for the Chinese Cresteds?
Both the Hairless and Powderpuff should be bathed regularly, teeth brushed, and toe nails trimmed. The Hairless skin should be protected with a sun block when outside for prolonged periods of time as sun over exposure will cause them to burn. Also, Hairless may suffer from "teenage like" acne so regular bathing with an antibacterial agent followed with an application of hand or body lotion will minimize this problem. Many people enjoy dressing their Hairless in cute clothes too! Some Hairless may have a reaction to wool or lotion containing lanolin. The Powderpuff should be checked daily to avoid and eliminate any developing mats. Routine brushing helps eliminate any loose hair, dirt and/or debris. Some Powderpuff owners prefer clean shaven ears, face, and shaved v-shape down the throat.
Are Chinese Cresteds easy to house train?
Toy breeds can be more difficult to house train. However, successful results can be achieved with positive reinforcements, repetition and consistency.
